Thank you ma’am

It is an amazing thing, 70 years of service. And almost always in the eye of the media and the public. Knowing your every move leads to comments, your every word is closely scrutinised. No real private life, no right to express your opinion. Having a busy schedule every day, and in difficult times people look to you to give them hope and comfort. No matter how scared you feel or how down you are.

There are voices now that say you represented colonistion, that you have lived a life of luxury and privileges. That you were conservative. Maybe so, but I wonder would any of those people have been able to do this ‘in service 24/24 7/7’ like you in stead of doing 40 years or less of work that was barely noticed globally? Would they have been able to stand the pressure of public opinion, the expectation of always being there and saying the right things at the right time? To review all the values and believes you grew up with every so often and adjust as far where needed?

I am not sure I believe it was god’s will that you were on the throne. But I do believe we can thank him that you were. Thank you ma’am for showing us what service is, sacrifice for others, for being a beacon in difficult times, your kind words and interest and bringing some humor along with it.
